ABOUT THE OPERATING THEATER COMPANY:
The Operating Theater Company examines provocative ideas about the world, human nature, and the fabric of reality. Taking its name from the traditional operating theater in which medical students perfect their craft in front of an audience of their peers, the OTC craft meaningful shared experiences with their audience. They are a group of performers and creative technologists lead by interdisciplinary artist, Jason Schuler. Since 2004, they have created ten unique full-length productions and dozens of short-form performances at venues including The Cherry Lane Alternative, New York Theater Workshop’s Fourth Street Theater, The Brick, Abrons Arts Center, Little Theater, Catch Series, and PS122’s Avant-Garde-Arama.
They are intent on pushing the boundaries of theater as an art form; blurring the line between performer and audience; questioning beginnings and endings. Work with the subconscious and the border between spirit and technology. Events the company produces are entertaining and thought provoking, intimate, but inclusive—both outright funny and deadly serious. The goal of the company is to experiment with performance that seamlessly transforms spectatorship into agency—that actively engages audiences and encourages mindfulness.
